Winter Skin Itch

Do You Have Winter Skin Itch?

Winter is a beautiful time of year that brings snowball fights, snowmen, and hot chocolate with yummy marshmallows. Unfortunately, it also brings dry, itchy skin that can result in bleeding when you don’t stop scratching. You know what I’m talking about! That itch that just doesn’t stop.

So, what causes itchy skin?

So, what exactly causes our skin to itch so much more in winter than in all the other seasons? While you can have it during the other seasons it seems to be more prominent in winter. There are a few reasons for this.

Dry Air, Hot Showers, & Chemicals

When the air is dry it literally takes moisture from your skin which leaves your skin feeling, tight, dry, and itchy. On the other hand, people typically take long, hot showers to warm up which strips your natural oils from your skin leaving your skin feeling dried out. Some people try to use witch hazel to treat their dry skin which makes it worse.

Medical Conditions

Dry skin can be a symptom of many skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, and more. There are also medical conditions like Diabetes which can affect the skin leaving it feeling dry.

Treatment

Your daily skincare routine changes as you age and as you age you will notice your skin becoming thinner. It’s important to find products with natural ingredients that moisturize your skin to reduce aging. In addition to natural moisturizing soap, you can

  • Limit your showers and baths to under 10 minutes
  • Gently exfoliate dead skin cells – think Oatmeal
  • Pat your skin dry instead of rubbing and apply lotion
  • Apply lotion again before bedtime
  • Use a humidifier to replenish moisture in the air.
  • Supplement your diet with omega-3 rich foods like flax, safflower oil, and walnuts.

What If Nothing Works?

Start analyzing what ingredients are in your products and do the research yourself to see what exactly those ingredients do to your skin. If you don’t like the feel of lotion when you put your clothes on afterwards, opt for a soothing, moisturizing oil such as Grapeseed Oil. It hydrates skin without that sticky feeling you typically have after applying lotion.
